How to Set Up Country-Based Payments in WooCommerce – 2024 Tutorial

Do you want to set country-based payments in your WooCommerce store?

If yes, then you’ve landed at the right place!

WooCommerce doesn’t allow you to set country-based payments. You need to use custom code to achieve country-based payments in WooCommerce. It becomes challenging if you don’t have any technical and coding experience.

But don’t worry. In today’s article, I’ll walk you through the simple and easy-to-follow steps to set country-based payments in the WooCommerce store with the help of the Conditional Shipping and Payments plugin.

You don’t need any technical or coding experience to follow the process. You just need to enable a few options from the plugin’s settings, and you are good to go.

Here’s a quick sneak peek of the final results.

What is meant by Country-Based Payments?

Country-based payments allow you to select the payment gateway accessible in a particular nation or country. You can hide any payment gateway from your WooCommerce store for specific countries.

You can display specific payment methods to users from particular countries. Let’s understand this with a few examples.

Example 1: Let’s say you want to give the “California USA” users the option to pay in installments using the “AfterPay.” Usually, users from other countries will also be able to use this payment gateway

And you want to restrict this payment method to California users only. You can do this by setting the country-based payments in WooCommerce.

This will allow the users of California to pay in installments while other users won’t even see this payment method.

Example 2: Let’s say you sell from the USA, and you want to give the option to the users of the USA to pay using the checks and cash on delivery.

Countries other than the USA won’t see those payment methods. In short, country-based payments means hiding a payment method for particular countries.

Benefits of Country-Based Payments in WooCommerce

Country-based payments will help you to give your users a completely personalized experience. If you don’t want to offer cash on deliveries for a specific country, then there is no such reliable method to do so.

And suppose a user from that particular country selects the cash on the delivery payment method. In that case, you probably need to ask the user to cancel the order and order it again with another payment method, which can cause you to lose the customers.

Instead of displaying all the available methods, you can hide a few payment methods based on the billing or shipping countries. It will improve the user’s experience and help you give them a personalized experience.

So now you know the benefits of using country-based payments. These are not only ones but essential ones.

Now let’s dive into the tutorial to set the country-based payments in WooCommerce.

How to Set Country-Based Payments in WooCommerce?

I’ll use the Conditional Shipping & Payment plugin to set country-based payments in WooCommece. This plugin also allows you to add restrictions to shipping methods and shipping countries.

I’ll be adding restrictions to payment gateways, so to set country-based payments, follow the following steps.

1. Install and Activate the Conditional Shipping and Payment Plugin

Note: You can skip this step if you have already installed and activated the Conditional Shipping and Payments plugin.

To install the Conditional Shipping and Payments plugin, you will need to install the Woosuite Core plugin and activate it with the help of a license key. We have created a Quick Start Guide for you to figure out how to install and activate the Conditional Shipping and Payments plugin.

2. Navigate to Shipping & Payments

Once the plugin is installed and activated, navigate to the Woosuite » Shipping & Payments from your WordPress admin dashboard.

3. Click the Payment Gateways tab

Click the “Payment Gateways” tab from the plugin’s settings to add a payment gateway restriction.

4. Add a Payment Gateway Restriction

To add a restriction, click the “Add Restriction” button.

Once you click the button, a new rule will be added and you can customize it to match your requirements.

4.1. Exclude Payment Gateways

From the “Exclude Gateways,” select the payment methods you want to hide from the users not in the country that we’ll select in the following steps.

4.2. Add Country-Based Condition

From the “Add Condition” dropdown, select the condition. You can select the conditions as follows:

  • Backorder
  • Billing Country
  • Category
  • Coupon Code
  • Customer
  • Customer Role
  • Order Total
  • Package Item Count
  • Product on Sale
  • Shipping Class
  • Shipping Country
  • Shipping Method
  • Shipping Postcode

I have selected the “Billing Country” from the dropdown, so if a user’s billing country matches the condition, he’ll be able to complete the checkout using the cash on delivery and check payment methods.

4.3. Select the Condition Type

From the next dropdown, you’ll get two options:

  • Is
  • Is not

I have selected ”is not.” It means that if the billing country is not the selected one, then the users won’t be able to see the methods we set in the previous steps.

4.4. Select the Country

From the “Billing Countries” field, select the country for which you want to enable the specific payment gateways.

For this tutorial, I have selected the USA. You can add as many rules as you want, but I have added only one payment restriction rule for this tutorial.

5. Save Changes

Once you have added the restriction, click the green “Save Changes button at the top right corner of your screen to save the changes and apply the restriction rules.

6. Final Results

Now let’s test the rule.

To test it, visit your store's checkout page and add the billing country as the USA. You’ll notice that you can also complete the purchase by “cash on delivery” and “check payment” methods.

Also, if you select a different country, you’ll notice that you won’t see the “cash on delivery” and “check payment” methods. ‘
