5 Coupon Restrictions Examples

Over 92% of customers surveyed in a 2020 study state that they look for a coupon before purchasing online. That said, we can all agree that coupons are a great way to grow your email list and increase your conversion rate.

Often you might have seen offers like ‘15% off your first order.’ In this example, the store restricts the coupon to first-time buyers.’

In today’s article, I’ll share a few more coupon restriction examples you can implement in your store. In the end, I’ll also share the plugin to help you add coupon restrictions.

What is meant by Coupon Restrictions?

Coupon restrictions are limitations that can only be applied or used under certain conditions. You can, for example, limit certain coupons to specific products.

There are numerous criteria that you can put in place to limit your coupon usage, the one you choose will depend on your specific goals for your online store and the type of products or services you sell.

Coupon Restriction Examples

Now that you better understand coupon restrictions, it’s time to look at some ideas for your store. Here are a few coupon restrictions examples you can implement in your store.

1. First-Time Customers

Offering coupon discounts to first-time customers is a great coupon restriction example. This is applied only when a new customer will buy from your store. Existing users won’t be able to redeem this coupon.

This helps you get more sales from new customers and can act as a loss leader for your business.

Adidas offers a 15% discount with rewards sign-up for new customers. Many other popular brands use this coupon restriction to increase sales and customers.

2. Order Total Restriction

It’s a good idea to offer coupons based on the order total. The customer can only apply and use the coupon if the total cart matches the condition.

For example, You can create a coupon in WooCommerce and allow customers to get a 20% discount if they spend $100.

This total order restriction can encourage customers to spend more to get discounts than they would otherwise. For example, they may be attracted to buy another product if they know it will qualify them for a 20% coupon.

3. Role Restrictions

Another common example of coupon restrictions is limiting discounts to specific customers. Assume you frequently receive orders from wholesale customers who often purchase in bulk.

You can create wholesale discount coupons to boost the chances that these customers will continue to buy from your online store.

To do so, make your coupon as usual in WooCommerce, then add the allowed customer user role condition using the Dynamic Pricing & Discount Rules plugin.

Choose wholesale customers or any other role you want to apply the coupon restriction. This will restrict the coupon’s use to customers who fall into that category.

You can also add coupon restrictions to guests or specific users.

4. Shipping Method Restriction

Shipping method restrictions mean that you can allow customers to use a coupon if they complete the checkout using a specific shipping method. This is useful if you have several

shipping options.

For example, You can allow customers to use a coupon to get a 10% discount if they checkout using the local pickup method.

5. Payment Method Restriction

You can apply coupon restrictions on payment methods. The coupons will allow the customers to get discounts if they checkout using a specific payment method

For example, You can create a coupon in WooCommerce and allow customers to use it at the checkout to get an additional 5% discount if they use the PayPal payment method.

There are several other coupon restrictions that you can use in your store like you can offer free shipping if the cart’s total matches the specific amount.
